Purtroppo in lingua originale Inglese. : This Italian Last Name of SINATRA was from a given name borne by both men and women in Sicily and South Calabria. The name was apparently in origin a nickname, from the Latin SENATOR, a member of the Roman Senate. The name was rendered in medieval documents in the Latin form SENATUS, meaning ‘old’ and the word later came to be used as a title of magistrates in various Italian states. The name is also spelt SINATORA. The origins of Italian last names are not clear, and much work remains to be done on medieval Italian records. It seems that stable bynames, in some cases hereditary, were in use in the Venetian Republic by the end of the 10th century. The typical Italian Last Name endings are ‘i’ and ‘o’, the former being characteristic of northern Italy. The singular form ‘o’ is more typical of southern Italy. A noble member of the name is the American singer and film actor, Frank (Francis Albert) SINATRA, who was born in Hoboken, New York in 1915. He started his long and highly successful career with the bands of Harry James and Tommy Dorsey and went on to make numerous films including ‘Anchors Aweigh’ (1945), ‘On the Town’ and ‘From Here to Eternity’, for which he received the Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans. They themselves had not long before adopted them. It became, in course of time, a mark of gentler blood, and it was deemed a disgrace for gentlemen to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. The Rose depicted in the arms is used as a distinction for the seventh son. The Distinction of Houses are used to distinguish the younger from the elder branches of a family, and to show from which line each is descended. Over the centuries, most people in Europe have accepted their Last Name as a fact of life, as irrevocable as an act of God. However much the individual may have liked or disliked the Last Name, they were stuck with it, and people infrequently modified them by personal choice. A more common form of variation was in fact involuntary, when an official change was made, in other words, a clerical error….
