Very ancient and noble family that takes its origins from Cefalonia. . The Loverdo contributed not little with their military and municipal actions to the maritime and commercial development of the Venetian Republic, along the Dalmatian coast and in the Greek archipelago. It’s said that a member of that important family, after taking refuge in cefalonia and after his marriage with a Matrakas, has becomed possesors of an immense wealth of lands. Anyway that family appears in the island only after 1207, with a lots of advantages. The firts archbishop of Cefalonia was Benedetto Loverdo also named Geradime, and after him other members of that family followed the ecclesiastical career. In the battle of Lepanto , in 1571, Agapito Loverdo wrest, triumphantly, a flag to the enemy. So the Loverdo sat in the noble Consilium of Celafonia, next to the most important lords of the place: Valsamachi, Tipaldo, the count Zuane from the Tenth and many others . For their merits the doge of Venice, Alvise Mocenigo, gaved to the Loverdo, in 1725, the title of count. The progeny of that family can boast : Giovanni Loverdo, an expert of law that in 1775 edited a code of cefalonic laws, Nicola Loverdo that, at the time of the French revolution, took part in the high degrees of the Napolenic army and in grievous events of Cefalonia….
