Pare essere originaria della Sicilia, donde ebbe dimora nella città di Palermo. Antica e nobile famiglia della Sicilia fregiata del titolo di Conti di Butera e di Paternò. A questa famiglia ha appartenuto il titolo di Conte, titolo che solevasi dagli imperatori a coloro che erano al loro fianco. Da questi Conti si sceglieva coloro che venivano destinati a soprintendere agli uffizi del regio palazzo, ed altri erano mandati al governo delle provincie dell’impero ed a gurdare i confini. Erano poi altri conti, estranei ai cennati uffizi, come quelli addetti all’annona, al commercio; ed anche i provveditori dell’esercito si ebbero quel titolo. The name is also spelt LUCIANIO, LUCIAN, LUJAN, LUKIANOV and LUKIANOVICH. A noble of the name was Charles (‘Lucky’) Luciano (1897-1962) Sicilian-born American gangster, convicted leader of organized crime in New York. His family emigrated to the USA in 1907. Luciano, who earned his nickname by avoiding imprisonment and prosecution for many years, was a Mafia godfather who operated successfully and profitably in the 1920s and 1930s. He founded his empire on narcotics-peddling, extortion, prostitution and networks of vice dens. His luck finally ran out when three prostitutes agreed to give evidence against him. He was arrested on 1st February 1936 for compelling women to become prostitutes, and was later found guilty. Even from prison, he retained control of his Family, initiating a reorganization of crime and setting up the Crime Syndicate of Mafia families. In 1946 he was released and was then rearrested and deported to Italy as an undesirable alien. He settled briefly in Havanna, and then tried to settle in various European cities but was invariably turned out of them. He eventually found refuge in Italy. He died at Naples Airport in 1962 and was only posthumously allowed to return to the USA, where he was buried at St.John’s Cemetery in New York. Notable members of the name include Henry Robinson LUCE (1898-1967) the American magazine publisher and editor, born in Shantung, China. He founded ‘Time’ (1923) ‘Fortune’ (1930) and ‘Life’ (1936). He also inaugurated the radio programe ‘March of Time’ in the 1930’s. His wife Clare Boothe LUCE, whom he married in 1935, when she was 20, was the American writer, socialite and wit. She was made associate editor of Vogue in 1930, American ambassador to Italy (1953-57) and was the author of several Broadway successes, including ‘Kiss the Boys Goodbye’ (1938)….
